First food regime (1780s-1945) - This is based on the colonial division of labour whereby colonial territories supply imperial and former imperial powers with unprocessed and semi-processed items. The major trade during this period was in grains and meat, a classic example being the beef production system of Argentina in the 1800s. This phase corresponds to the industial phase of the first wave of globalization identified in Chapter 3. The Great Depression and the First World War led to the end of this regulatory regime.
