In keeping with the philosophy of the ABCD model, it was considered important to use members of the school community and the parents in holding the focus groups. In Building Communities from the Inside Out, Kretzmann and McKnight (23) describe
the ABCD approach that recognizes the talents and capacities of people in the community and the importance of using these. If groups begin to deal more with external institutions than with people in their own community, it reinforces the notion that
‘only outside experts can provide real help’ (23).
