There is movement towards monitoring the effectiveness of
infusion therapy to match the drug that has been prescribed to
that of the device. Monroy et al (2013) showed that for over
3681 infusions through volumetric pumps only 56% infused
to time as expected. Some of the infusions went a long way
over the time prescribed and raised the question of whether
the ‘therapeutic window’ had actually been met, or if the time
delay resulted in the medication potentially being wasted.
