วันที่ 5 สิงหาคม 2010 กระทรวงพลังงานได้จัดโครงการโรงไฟฟ้ากังหันลมแห่งแรกของประเทศไทยที่โรงไฟฟ้ากังหันลม "เทพสถิต วอนด์ ฟาร์ม" ในจังหวัดชัยภูมิ ซึ่งได้กำหนดเป้าหมายในโครงการนี้ว่า ให้ประเทศไทยใช้แหล่งพลังงานหมุนเวียน ร้อยละ 20 ของพลังงานที่ผลิตได้ ภายในปี พ.ศ. 2563


โดยมีบริษัท จีอี (General Electric Co.)เป็นหนึ่งในผู้ผลิตกังหันชั้นนำของโลก และ โปร เวนทุม อินเตอร์เนชั่นแนล ลงนามในบันทึกความเข้าใจ (MOU) ได้รับมอบหมายให้ จีอี เป็นผู้จัดหากังหันลมที่มีกำลังผลิต 2.5 เมกะวัตต์ จำนวน 36 ตัว โดย จีอี ได้กล่าวไว้ว่านับเปนโครงการโรงไฟฟ้ากังหันลมแห่งแรกของประเทศไทยที่มีกำลังผลิตมากที่สุด และภุมิภาคอาเซียน ที่ผ่าน จีอี เป็นหนึ่งในผู้ผลิตกังหันลมชั้นนำของโลก โดยที่ผ่านมาได้ติดตั้งกังหันลมผลิตไฟฟ้าไปแล้วกว่า 14,000 ตัวทั่วโลก รวมชั่วโมงการใช้งานกว่า 218 ล้านชั่วโมง และผลิตไฟฟ้าไปแล้ว 127,000 กิกะวัตต์ชั่วโมง (GWh) กังหันขนาดกำลังผลิต 2.5 เมกะวัตต์ เป็นกังหันลมขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดของจีอีที่มีใช้บนบกในขณะนี้ และเป็นกังหันลมที่ใช้ในเชิงพาณิชย์ ที่มีเทคโนโลยีล้ำสมัยที่สุดเท่าที่มีอยู่ในปัจจุบัน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในแง่ของประสิทธิภาพ ความน่าเชื่อถือ และขีดความสามารถในการเชื่อมต่อเข้ากับสายส่ง (grid connection capabilities)
