Lugol's solution is a solution of iodine and iodide in water, and is used as a topical disinfectant and antiseptic, an emergency water disinfectant, as an iodine source for saltwater aquariums, and for other uses. It can also be taken to cure iodine deficiency and to keep the thyroid from absorbing iodine-131, a highly radioactive isotope of iodine common in nuclear fallout. Invented in 1829 by the French physician Lugol, it has been tried and true for 180 years.
This solution comes in an amber glass bottle with an eye dropper. Ingredients are iodine, potassium iodide, and distilled water. All ingredients are of USP/food grade. Each full eyedropper contains approximately 85mg of iodine, and about 5.2mg iodine per drop. The iodine solution can gradually corrode the rubber in the eyedropper, so a teflon-lined cap is supplied for storage
