Angola, situated on the west coast of Africa above Namibia and below Congo, is a leading
African country in terms of natural resources. After its independence from the former
Portuguese colony in 1975, and a long war lasting 27 years (1975–2002), the country
has been rebuilding its economy, relying largely on its oil production. Tourism is a
recent emerging industry in Angola. The country is currently trying to benefit from its
exceptional wealth in natural resources to foster tourism growth. A minister of hotels
and tourism has been appointed in the present government, reflecting the strong commitment
to tourism development.
