Background: Littleisknownaboutsuicidalideationandbehaviours inadjustmentdisorder(AD).Inthispaper
wesoughttoexaminethevariablesindependentlyassociatedwithsuicidalideationandbehaviourinpatients
diagnosedwithADordepressive(DE)episodeamongpsychiatricoutpatientsandinliaisonpsychiatry.
Methods: 370patientswhowerereferredtotheliaisonpsychiatryservices(includingthoseseeninthe
EmergencyDepartment)at3Dublinhospitals,andwereclinicallydiagnosedwitheitherDEorAD,basedon
the ICD10diagnosticcriteria,wererecruitedtothestudy.Weexaminedtheirdemographicandclinical
characteristics,andtheassociationsbetweenthese and suicidalideationandbehaviouronmultivariate
analysis.
Results: Youngerage,singlemaritalstatus,andgreaterseverityofdepressivesymptomsweresignificantly
associatedwithsuicidalityacrossbothdiagnoses.Onmultivariateanalysis,greaterseverityofdepressive
symptomswasassociatedwithsuicidalityinthosewithAD(p¼0.012)andDE(p¼0.009).ThosewithAD
exhibitedsuicidalityatlowersymptomscoresthandidthosewithDEbutinbothgroupsitstilloccurredat
the highestlevelofseverity.Thereweredifferencesintheobjectivecircumstancesmeasureofsuicideintent.
Limitations: Weusedclinicaldiagnosisrather asthemaindiagnosticclassification. Thegeneralisabilityofthis
papermaybelimitedtoconsultation-liaisonpsychiatrysettings,wheresuicidalideationandbehavioursare
common.
Conclusions: SuicidalityinADandDEhasbroadlysimilarriskfactorsbutdifferinaspectsofsuicideintent.
