paradoxical; this is a common finding in game theory, many conclusions being
counter-intuitive. The classic PD situation involves two prisoners who are held
in separate police cells, accused of committing a crime. They cannot communicate
with each other, so each does not know how the other is acting. If
neither confesses, the prosecutor can get them convicted only on other
minor offences, each prisoner receiving a one-year sentence. If one confesses
while the other does not, the one confessing will be freed while the other one
receives a ten-year sentence. If both confess they will each receive a five-year
