Cattle. Six Brahman-cross steers (5/8 Bos indicus× 3/8 Bos taurus), 9 months
old and 169 + 5 kg LW were kept under cover in individual pens. They received
anti-parasitic and vitamin treatment like the goats and then were fed
chopped verano hay with calcium phosphate supplement. The cattle had access
to water (not demineralised) from the same supply as the goats but without
additional Na. After 2.5 months they were transferred to metabolism crates
for two weeks and measurements of digestion and mineral metabolism were
made during the second week after feed intake had stabilised. Because of limited
facilities and availability of experimental cattle, steers were fed the low-
Na diet only and compared only with LS goats.
