Most research on cosmetics industry wastewaters has focused
on development of advanced physical chemical processes for
improved COD removal, with limited studies published on cosmetics
industry wastewaters toxicity [4–7,18–20]. Despite the
growing economic importance of this industry in many developing
countries, including Brazil, the authors found no research published
to date that reports on TIE of this type of industrial effluent. Therefore,
the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the
wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at a small hair care products
manufacturing plant located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil and
to apply TIE procedures to the treated wastewater. The results could
provide information useful for improving treatment plant operation
and establishing relevant discharge limits and aquatic toxicity
criteria for such manufacturing plants.
