Dear colleagues,
I want to share with you some changes I am making to the top team at Tesco. These changes are the first steps designed to put the customer at the heart of everything we do, whilst simplifying how we operate at the top, and therefore all the way through the business. I have changed some responsibilities and reduced the number of roles. My sole intention is to build a tight team of experts who pull together to drive the turnaround in performance that we are all looking for.
I have asked Jill Easterbrook to work directly for me as the full time leader of our business transformation. Jill has a very broad appreciation for our business and a first-rate track record from working across the business, and is therefore uniquely placed to work with me to lead the total transformation programme.
I have asked Benny Higgins, in addition to his role leading the Bank and our international financial services business, to take on the additional responsibility of group strategy. I want to evolve the role of group strategy – I want commercially-focused input and challenge to our appraisal of strategic options and investment decisions, and Benny is uniquely placed to play this role.
I have asked Rebecca Shelley to focus 100% of her talent and effort into our corporate communications agenda. There is so much we need to share about the great work we do as a business that I want this role to be elevated in our decision-making and communications. To allow Rebecca to do this I will align the Investor Relations team, led by Chris Griffith, with Alan Stewart, the Group CFO. I would like to thank Rebecca for all her great work in IR in challenging circumstances.
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Jason Tarry as the head of Commercial for the UK and the Group. Jason, as you know, has had a long and distinguished career here since joining as a graduate, and is someone who will lead the commercial function with foresight, rigour and inspiration. He has the values I want to see across our organisation and I want to thank him for the way in which he has stepped up to lead Commercial over the last few months. He and the team have been outstanding.
I am also pleased to announce that Robin Terrell will become our head of Customer. Robin's experience and track record speak for themselves - but the fact that all of this track record comes by being 100% customer-focused is what makes him perfect for this role. The changing nature of customers' lives, the technology revolution and the need to present a more consistent and compelling view of Tesco across all our customer touch points, is a real opportunity for us and I know that Robin is uniquely equipped to lead us on this journey.
Very sadly the changes to the leadership team also mean that some roles will no longer be needed. These include Matt Atkinson's role as Chief Creative Officer and David Hobbs' as Group Business Planning and Strategy Director.
Matt has decided to pursue interests outside Tesco, but before he does I'm delighted that he will spend the next few months working alongside Robin, bringing his creative genius to bear on our brand. David similarly wants to move on in time, but before then I've asked him to support me as we better understand and develop our strategy for hypermarkets.
I'd like to thank Matt and David for their contribution and commitment during their time at Tesco, and more personally their unfailing support since I joined.
All other functions and international operations are unchanged.
These changes to the Executive will be effective from 1st January. As Jill moves to the transformation role and Robin to his focus on our customers I will, on a temporary basis, take over the day to day leadership of the UK operation and we will all work together to make sure the transition is smooth.
In our new roles we will work the remainder of the transformation plan for our business. We will begin to engage the senior leaders into that process and we will share it with you as the details emerge. I do not intend this to take a long time, but I do understand that the operational focus right now needs to be on delivery of Christmas for our customers, so please be patient until the new year to hear more from me on the evolution of our organisation and our fuller change agenda.
My thanks again for all that you are doing. The reinvigoration of putting the customer at the heart of all we do is beginning to make a difference, so please keep this going. Here's to a strong Christmas and thanks again for all your support.
