The best time to visit DC is spring (April to May) or autumn (September to October). Summer is a busy tourist season, but weather can be extremely hot and humid, especially in July and August. Plan your travel for the cooler mornings and late afternoons (advance planning can also reduce your time in queues); aim to be inside in air-conditioning during the midday heat; carry water; and wear hats, sunblock and loose, light clothing. Winters are generally mild, with temperatures hovering around freezing. The city has been known to shut down due to snow storms, especially in January.
