Four consequences of encountering barriers to care were
mentioned by patients in all focus groups,in all contexts:(1)
having to restart the care-seeking process;(2)having to go to a
hospital emergencyroom;(3)abandoning care-seeking;and(4)
experiencingadeterioration in health(Fig. 1). These consequences
can occur at any point in the care-seekingtrajectory.Apersonmay
encounter morethanonebeforeobtainingappropriatecare.For
example,apersonmayopttogothehospitalemergencyroom
afterseveralattemptstogetseenatvariousclinics,andthen
abandon care-seekingaltogetherwhenfacedwithalongwait.
