Some parents who were the star pupils of their chemistry classes is high school just love the thought of doing those tricky and impressive science projects with their kids to wow them and teach them all about the workings of the scientific world. That’s all well and good, but what about those of us who may not be as scientifically inclined but would still like to do a science project with our kiddos without blowing up the kitchen? Well, slide on back to the groovy ‘70s, man, and get in on this homemade lava lamp action. It’s easy and fun, and your kids will think you’re one cool cat.
All you need to make your own lava lamp is a tall empty water bottle with the labels removed, some cooking oil, water, food coloring and some Alka-Seltzer antacid tablets. Fill the bottle up about 2/3rds of the way with the cooking oil, then fill the rest of the bottle with water, leaving an inch of space at the top. Add several drops of food coloring to the bottle; use any color you’d like and wait while you watch the food coloring sink down through the oil to color the water. Next, break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into small pieces and drop one piece into the bottle. When the antacid pieces hit the water it will “erupt” like lava and droplets of colored water will float like lava globules through the oil. When the action stops, drop in another piece of the antacid tablet to watch the fun all over again.
