Many of Taylor’s efforts laid the ground work for what we now call predetermined time standards. Some of the more popular systems, as described in Maynard’s Industrial Engineering Handbook, are Motion Time Analysis (BMT), and Methods of Time Measurement (MTM). These systems share common threads, and result from the following methods: time study, work sampling, and standard data development. This article will focus on standard data development as one method of establishing predetermined time standards and improving productivity.
