IMPROVING NATIONAL FOOD CONTROL SYSTEMS
Preparation of a National Plan of Action for Nutri- tion provided an opportunity for nations to evaluate their own food control system and suggest improve- ments. Frequently, the nations used FAO/WHO guidelines (FAOWHO, 1976; Whitehead, 1995) to examine each segment of their food control system related to these essential elements: (i) the basic food law; (ii) regulations on food hygiene, food standards, use of food additives and agricultural chemicals and/or labelling; and (iii) the organization of admin- istrative officers, inspectors and analysts. Statements documenting the need for improvement included: ??Asia h: no national legislation and food safety control measures currently exist in the country.
