1. Lay a belt flat on a table. Guide the student in placing his or her hands about 1 feet apart on top of the belt. Assist the student in moving the hands together to form a loop and then moving the hands back to flatten the belt back down. This activity can be modified to a "Simon Says" type of game or performing the movement in time to music.
2. Buckle an oversized belt and place it on a table in front of the student, with the fastened buckle pointing away from the student. Using the skills from Step 1, guide the student to grasp the belt end in the left hand and use the right hand to grasp the belt past the buckle and push the belt together until a loop is formed inside the buckle.
3. Perform Step 2, changing to using the student's belt that is buckled on his or her pants, making a loop in the middle of the belt.
4. Grasp the loop made in Step 3 and pull it forward until the belt end is freed from the buckle.
5. Pull the end of the belt to the right until the center post in the buckle becomes free of the belt, then grasp the center post and move it to the left.
6. Continuing to hold the center post of the belt, grasp the belt on the right side and pull the belt through the buckle.
7. Move the right hand down to the right and continue to pull the belt through the loops on the right side of the pants.
8. Grasp the buckle with the right hand and use the left hand to continue to pull the belt through the belt loops.
9. Continue to hold the buckle with the right hand and pull the belt through the remaining loops.
10. Combine Steps 3 through 9 into one action, reducing prompting to a total-task request: "(Name), please take off your belt," and reducing reinforcement to once per training session.
