Although highly geometric and structural performative, Saarinen's work was not conceived parametrically. The firm constantly investigated new material uses, engineering systems, and construction techniques, including technical research into the structural performance of curved shapes, particularly catenary arches and structure concrete shells. Much of Saarinen's explorations were through the use of large scale study models.
The building is primarily composed of canted columns, which are hexagonal in section; a catenary roof, thicker at mid-section, with openings for columns at either end; and a faceted curved glass facade between the columns. เท the original construction, sixteen columns were constructed on both the north and south facades. These elements and their layout are the focus of the design parameterization. To the left are aerial views of the original design (at top) and three reparameterized variations.
