Value Stream
In “Lean Thinking” by Womack and Jones (1996), they describe the process o f
value mapping as a thorough investigation o f your process from raw material to final
disposal o f your product (p. 37-49). This would include mining the metal to melt into a
block o f material that can be machined. When the value stream mapping was done at
Huntington Beach, they kept the scope within the organization. Huntington Beach
decided to evaluate the value stream o f their main product, the Delta II rocket. This was
a very labor-intensive project, requiring the participation o f nearly every support function
at Huntington Beach:
