Probiotics and prebiotics could affect the host in
combination by synergistic action. The term probiotics
is connected with functional food whereas the term
prebiotics is generally used to define non-digestible
food ingredients that beneficially affect the host by
selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of
one or a limited number of bacterial species already
established in the colon, and thus in effect improve the
host health9. These prebiotics include inuline,
fructooligosaccharides, galactooligosaccharides and
lactulose.
