The decrease in nerve conduction velocity observed in this study was,
probably partly, due to the decrease in minimum thickness of myelin sheath
combined with myelinated fiber degeneration in sciatic nerve. Since myelin
coating acts as an insulator to prevent current leakage across the myelinated
portion of the membrane, myelination increases the speed of conduction of
action potentials. Thus demyelination that observed in this study may result
in nerve conduction deficit.
