6.2 THEORIES OF THE CAUSES OF JOB SATISFACTION
Despite the variety of variables suggested as having major, minor or moderating effects on job satisfaction, it is possible to divide these factors into three distinct groups:
• Organizational policies and procedures. These concern such things as the reward system (the perceived equity of pay and promotions), supervision and decision-making practices, perceived quality of supervision. Inevitably, each and all of these can effect job satisfaction.
• Specific aspects of the job such as overall workload, skill variety, autonomy, feedback, the physical nature of the work environment. These must have an important effect.
• Personal characteristics such as self-esteem, ability to tolerate stress, general life satisfaction probably determine job satisfaction.
