There are altogether 95 stupas in Wat Pho and all of them are in the indented- corner style. These stupas can be classifiled into three groups: The great stupas, The group stupas, and The line stupas. There are 71 line Stupas lined along the other outer walls of the galleries. There are four groups of grouped stupas and each group consists of five stupas. The central one in the group is slightly larger than the other four. There are the great stupas which are the most improtant of all. You can see that they all are the same height, 41 meters. The four stupas were buiit on three separate occasions. The Great stupa in green tiles was built by order of King Rama 1 to cover a standing Budda image called Phra Si Sanphet, brought from Wat Phra Si Sanphet in Ayutthaya. This image was originally covered with gold weighing about 343 kilos. When Ayutthaya fell in 1767, the image was badly damaged. The king had the image transferred to Wat Pho and had this stupa built to cover it. Therefore this green stupa represents King Rama 1. The second occasion was when King Rama 3 had two more Great Stupas built to the north and to the south of the first Great Stupa. The north one, which is in white tiles, was dedicated to King Rama 2, his father. The south one, in yellow tiles, was built for himself. Therefore the Great Stupa in white tiles represent King Rama 2, and the yellow one represent King Rama 3.
The third occasion was when King Rama 4 had the Great Stupa in blue tiles built to mark his reign. The style of the blue stupa is slightly different from the other three because it was copied from Chedi Sisuriyothai in Ayutthaya. The king had the four Great Stupas enclosed by a wall as he did not want any more Great Stupas built in Wat Pho. These four king knew each other personally when they were alive.
