A review. From the limited amount of work carried out on the subject, it seems likely that selective breeding for attenuated responsiveness to stress is feasible in fish. The approach most likely to give satisfactory results is to utilize between- and within-family selection. The use of plasma cortisol concentration as the selection trait has been criticized because of its low h², but further work is necessary before this trait can be dismissed as an index of stress response. It has yet to be unequivocally demonstrated that, under aquaculture conditions, high responsiveness to stress is a disadvantage and low responsiveness is advantageous.
