Quadriceps muscle strength is key to motions
requiring elevating and lowering the body, such as
rising from a chair, climbing, jumping and walking.53
Knee extension peak torque reveals highest force
of the quadriceps muscle group to produce an
extended rotation on the measured knee. Since
knee extension peak torque had been less in the
experimental group than the control group at
baseline, tendency of less peak torque in the
experimental group was detected over time. However,
right knee extension peak torque (TRE) in the
experimental group was congruent to a study in Thai
women with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.54
One effect of stationary cycling exercise is
strengthening muscles including the quadriceps,
which do most work during cycling.46,47 Therefore,
quadriceps muscle strength in the experimental group
improved overtime although no significant
difference between groups was found.
