Expectation concerned the participants’ ideas of what it would be like to experience MI. Some participants were unaware thatMI could have symptoms other than typical chest pain, so the symptoms they experienced did not always signal to themthe possibility ofMI. The
mismatch between the symptoms they experienced and their expectations ofMI made them hesitate to seek care. The symptoms that I had were notVI don’t think youwould associate them with myocardial infarction. My arms felt somehow heavy. But I thought that [with myocardial infarction], one would beVhave pain inVchest pain I think it
should have been.
