• Look back over at least the last 3 catheter changes
and work out how long the catheter functions for before
bypassing/blocking (Catheter life}. Plan subsequent
changes to happen before this time.
• If patient has a supra pubic catheter consider increasing
the lumen size by one size at each change to a maximum
of 18ch or as per local policy (a larger size lumen
means the catheter life should be extended)
• Consider discussing the use of cranberry juice or
Vitamin C with the patient and the rest of the
clinical team.
• Consider referral to urologist or continence advisor.
