Rationale:
Using an antimicrobial preparation for surgical hand antisepsis is an integral part of the presurgical scrubbing procedure to prevent postoperative infections. Because the infection developed on postoperative day 2, it was most likely caused by a break in sterile technique during surgery. Either a surgical hand scrub or a brushless antimicrobial preparation may be used for hand asepsis. A wound infection would not occur on the same day as a potential contamination of a dressing change.
