Finding a frozen mammoth is a great discovery, particularly one that is in very good condition. Scientists can study the contents of the mammoth’s stomach to find out about its diet. This can tell them two things: it tells them about the mammoth’s lifestyle; and it tells them about the plants that were common when the mammoth was alive. However they can’t learn very much about the mammoth’s behaviour. To do this, they would have to clone the animal. Professor Akira Iritani of Kinki University, in Japan, is just one of several scientists who hope to clone a mammoth. Professor Iritani believes that we many see a “Jurassic Park” for mammoths in Siberia in as twenty years!
