Balance disorders may result from complications due to the aging process as well as inner-ear problems (Palacio, 1999). Medications prescribed to combat high blood pressure or diabetes may also deprive me patient of oxygen leading to balance difficulties. Similarly, disorders affecting general oxygenation or decreased carotid blood flow that may not be readily manageable may result in untreatable balance problems as well. While correctly diagnosed causes of balance disorders are often treatable, the challenge remains for both physicians and audiologists to help patients accept that some balance disorders are untreatable.
