Sixteen children counted the number of units on the long before attempting ab exchange. The rest who wanted to trade 10 immediately looked at the difference between the group of 14 units and the group of 4 units in sight in deciding how many to exchange for a long. The most common responses other than 10 were 2 and 6. Twenty-five of the children gave such a response. This could be considered a functional trade designed to achieve a goal of having enough to furnish the 6 requesed. Only 24 children saw 10 as an exchange leaving the total unchanged, either immediately or after initial incorrect trials.
