The presence of exogenous ethylene in the storage atmosphere
of broccoli raab not treated with 1-MCP was responsible for a
sharp increase in ammonia content in the tissue which, from an
initial value of 0.24±0.1mol NH4 g−1, reached a final value of
13.4±1.34mol NH4 g−1 (Fig. 1C). When exogenous ethylene was
applied to samples treated with 1-MCP only a slight increase in
ammonia content was observed, not different from the treated samples stored in air
