70 g/L was used as the sole carbon source, the substrate-consumption
curves almost overlapped (Figure
2C), and exhibited the same sugar-consumption rate of
0.50 g/L/h (Table 1). When the two sugars were mixed
to give a total sugar concentration of 70 g/L, both glucose
and xylose were each assimilated at a reduced rate;
for example, a 1:1 mixture resulted in a consumption of
0.28 g/L/h glucose and 0.29 g/L/h xylose. The total
sugar-consumption rates were nearly identical regardless
of which substrate compositions were (Table 1, experiments
1 to 5).
