4. Discussion
This study adopted an exploratory approach (a) to investigate the profiles of needs and strengths of children in
out-of-home placements; (b) to examine if there are any differences in age and gender in profiles of needs and strengths; and (c) to examine the prevalence of school performance needs and whether the school performance needs are associated with other areas of need. Findings indicated that children in out-of-home care have a relatively low prevalence of Behavioral and Emotional, and Risk Behavior needs. In addition, the results indicated that the older group of children (13 to 17 years) had significantly higher overall needs in the Behavioral and Emotional, Risk Behavior, School, and Life Functioning domains than the younger group (5 to 12 years). Lastly, children with Moderate and Severe School Performance needs had significantly higher overall domain scores on the Behavioral and Emotional Needs and Risk Behavior Needs domains as compared to children with no needs in this area.
