Taken all together, chronic alcohol consumption causes increased serum/hepatic lipids, but supplementing Tau can reduce them, which is related to increased fecal lipid and bile acid outputs. Tau increases ADH, CAT, and ALDH enzyme systems but not CYP2E1 which accelerates alcohol metabolism in alcohol-fed rats and alleviates liver damage. Besides, supplementing Tau also enhances self-antioxidant capacity (GSH contents, CAT and GSH-Px activities) to protect the liver from oxidative damage. Therefore, Tau is an effective hepatoprotective agent against alcohol-induced damage.
