3. Results
A total of 315 patients consented and all were included in the analysis. Table 1 shows the baseline characteristics of the patients in the sample. There were 53 (16.8%) patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder, while 30 (9.5%) were found to have generalized anxiety disorder. The general characteristics of the depressed or anxious patients corresponded to those of the sampled population, i.e., predominantly female, Chinese, married, unemployed, in stage 4 cancer and robust social support. In terms of self-rated mental health, both the depressed and anxious groups tended to rate themselves to have no mental health problems (67.9% and 60.0%, respectively).
