Het is mijn droom om op wereldreis te gaan.
Ja.
Nee.
Introduction
This paper is about Frankenstein, a book written by Mary Shelley. I have read the book, watched the movie and I saw a performance. In this paper I will discuss things such as genre, the character etc. I will also tell something about Mary Shelley because if you read a book and write a paper about it, it’s nice to know who the writer is.
I liked the reading in it. It makes you think about things such as life and death. In the beginning it was difficult for me to keep on reading but when the creature is finished then it was difficult for me to stop reading. It took me about 2 weeks to finish the book.
Genre
Frankenstein contains different genres. They are science fiction and gothic. But why?
Gothicism is characterised with innovation, freedom of thought and expression and idealisation of nature. It is also the belief of living in an new age of ‘’new beginnings and high possibilities.’’ It also shows the dark side of human nature.
Many of these things appear in Frankenstein. The glacial, bleak fields of the Alps and the mists of the Arctic indicates the isolation of Victor and the monster.
Science fiction explores the wonders of discovery and achievement that may result from future developments in technology and science. Mary Shelley used some of the most recent discoveries of her time to create Frankenstein. She has used the myth of Prometheus. Prometheus stole the light from the Gods to help the people while Victor discovers elektricity to make a new race.
I think the genre is gothicism because gothicism is about the dark side of human nature and that thing is present in the book. Secondly, you can relate Frankenstein to the myth of Prometheus. In that story the dark side of human nature is also shown. People think they are everything but they forget that you can be punished severely by the gods. Prometheus was punished hard, Victor too.
Science fiction is also present because in the book new discoveries are made. Also, in the movie they talk about new vaccinations. When Victor and a teacher vaccinate the people the teacher is killed. Victor then thinks of creating life. So one discovery leads to another. But the goal of the book is more to show you the dark side of human nature.
‘Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live? Why, in that instant, did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you had so wantonly bestowed? I know not: despair had not yet taken possession of me: my feelings were those of rage and revenge. I could with pleasure have destroyed the cottage and it’s inhabitants and have glutted myself with their shrieks and misery.
