VALIDATING ENVIRONMENTAL CLAIMS
In 2009, Johnson & Johnson launched EARTHWARDS™, an internal process to better understand products’ environmental
footprints and identify opportunities for improvements. Product teams use an EARTHWARDS™ Product Scorecard to
evaluate how product changes lead to quantifiable improvements in materials, packaging, energy, waste, and water use. If the
product shows results in at least three priority eco-areas, teams can submit the scorecard to the EARTHWARDS™ board,
which includes external evaluators, for review and validation. The process better equips marketing and communications teams
to make responsible environmental claims to retailers, customers, and key procurement groups. According to Paulette Frank,
the company's Vice President of Sustainability for its consumer products division, EARTHWARDSTM “enables us to drive
eco-innovation to the product level at J&J.”21
