As we said in Chapter 1, little is more important to adolescents than SFC – status, freedom and control. These are the stereotypical obsession of young people and they are precisely what we attempt to remove from them when they enter a classroom. It’s hardly surprising that things don’t always run smoothly. It’s hardly surprising that pupils sometimes resent you – because SFC is what you have got as a teacher, in abundance. You’re stolen it from them.
