Novomer polypropylene carbonate (PPC), used as a low temperature, cleanly decomposing binder for green ceramic powders before sintering, is an innovative solution for creating advanced ceramic products. It can also be used as a fugitive material for forming pores, lattices and other structures in a ceramic product. Advanced ceramics are used in a diverse array of applications including wear parts, bearings, seals and structural component coatings, but the most common application is electronic components, such as integrated circuit packages and capacitors. Used as a sacrificial additive or binder, PPC does not remain in the final ceramic part; it is instead cleanly & completely thermally decomposed leaving virtually no ash residue or impurities.
In a related application, Novomer PPC can be used as a low temperature, cleanly decomposing vehicle for metallization paste applications such as frontside and backside solar photovoltaics or printed electronics.
PPC is removed under low temperatures (<250°C) in a mild, endothermic process resulting in complete decomposition with mild gas evolution into CO2 and water, which is non-toxic and non-flammable. While not soluble in water, PPC can form stable aqueous suspensions for water-based processes.
Compared to traditionally used binders and vehicles like polyvinyl butyral or ethyl cellulose, Novomer’s PPC burns more cleanly, in a more uniform manner and at lower temperatures, producing an end product with no contamination from the binder. Not only does this provide more consistent ceramic products with improved mechanical and electrical properties, but also uses less energy to manufacture because of shorter sintering time and lower furnace temperature to remove the binder.
PPC can be used in a variety of ceramic processing techniques, including:
•Dry pressing
•Tape casting
•Injection molding
•Extrusion
•Screen Printing
Currently ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) are used as the barrier layer in most flexible and rigid packaging applications. These petroleum based plastics require significant amounts of energy to manufacture and release large amounts of greenhouse gases in the process. PEC not only offers similar performance but sequesters carbon dioxide from the environment.
