INTRODUCTION
In this work, a travel assistant for on route public
transport passengers is described. The system provides real
time information to the passenger of a public transport bus.
The provided information is related to the route followed by
the vehicle, for example: name of the route, stops, next stop,
estimated time for the next stop, estimated time for the
destination stop of the traveler, etc. Additionally, this
information is adapted to the traveler preferences: media
used (text, acoustic warning and voice messages) and
languages (English or Spanish). For this reason, the system
is a useful tool to improve the accessibility of the public
transport for persons with special needs (for example blend
and deaf) or non-regular users of a public transport networks
(for example tourist).
The system uses the vehicle infrastructure (positioning
system, local network and operations control system) to
provide real time information that can be accessed using the
traveler mobile terminals (mobiles phones, smart phones
and tablet). In order to achieve a high level of usability, the
system uses common technologies in mid-range hand-sets,
specifically the Bluetooth and Android technologies. This
paper illustrates a wide range of functionalities that Android
technology provides for the development of multimedia
pervasive applications. The system is conceived to offer a
quality and robust information services, avoiding large
