reproduc- tion. Food quantity is an important factor affect- ing reproduction in fish. Hester (1964) report- ed that a scarcity of food reduced fertility in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. Female fish need adequate protein, fat, vitamins and min- erals for egg development and spawning. Yolk is composed of phospholipo proteins, an amalgam of minerals (phosphorous), protein and lipid. Protein is also required to form folli- cles in the embryo. The absence of any one of these nutrients can reduce the survival of lar- vae that hatch from these eggs (James and Sampath, 2002).
