Darbey’s Study Skins 2009 explores the darker side of natural history collections, and represents the intermediate stage of Darbey’s evolution from 2D drawing to her 3D “hollow drawings”.
Darbey’s “skins” are drawn from direct observation of taxidermy mounts augmented with heavy, sinewy lines of overlaid stitch. Contrary to the sense of animated life often seen in museum wildlife dioramas or in taxidermy mounts, Darbey’s birds are displayed as lifeless, unsettling and melancholic carcasses.
