Humiliation or tough love? Debate over punishments handed to Chinese students
Pictures of college students being punished during freshman year military drills have stirred a debate on social media in China.
In one set of images, students from a college in south China’s Hunan Province were seen wrapped in quilts and lying on the ground under the scorching sun.
“The instructor will inspect whether they were enveloped tightly,” said Liu Min, one of the freshmen who witnessed the punishment. “But the punishment lasts no more than 10 minutes,” she added.
Another picture showed students from the same college being ordered to run while being wrapped in quilts and with buckets covering their heads.
