Scoring the resulting metrics requires a basic set of data on the fishery that should be available
in all significant fisheries (e.g., landings volumes and approximate prices), and local expert
assessment of qualitative indicator levels. Metrics emphasize the current status of the fishery,
some relative to the recent past. We avoid forecasts or sustainability estimates because data,
analysis, and political processes across the range of fisheries do not support accurate projections
about the status of fisheries in the future; instead, the rapid assessment nature of the FPIs
facilitates repeat application that directly measures future conditions, and the role of management
in determining them
