2.8. Antimicrobial microdilution assay
The minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of the extracts was evaluated using the serial micro-dilution assay (Eloff, 1998) for antibacterial activity and with modifications for antifungal activity as described by Masoko et al. (2007). Controls used and details of the assays were as outlined by Aremu et al. (2010). One fungal strain (Candida albicans ATCC 10231) and four bacteria consisting of two Gram-positive (Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 19433 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 12600) and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC 11775 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 10145) strains were used for the study.
