Wayne Rainey won three consecutive world championships riding 500cc Grand Prix bikes in the early 1990s for Yamaha. He was on his way to a fourth when a terrible crash during the Italian Grand Prix in 1993 confined the Californian to a wheelchair. After that Rainey became the team manager for the Marlboro Yamaha team.
Now he is President of the MotoAmerica series, a new championship with the goal of developing young American racers to ultimately go to MotoGP, and so promoting the motorcycle premier class in the US. The series has six different classes, arguably the most interesting of which is the KTM RC 390 Cup, in which youngsters race with exactly the same bikes.
Rainey was a three-time world champion. Now he is looking for an heir to follow his footsteps.
