Upside-Down Reference Photo
Turn the book upside down so you can see the image. Now, look at the values. Squint! The lower right quadrant has an area where all three values work together: white, gray and black shapes interlock.
Isolate the Design
Two L-shaped pieces of mat board or any stiff paper can be used to make an adjustable format. Move it around your photo until you find a design with a movement of light shapes against dark. Squint to see the pattern. Select the most interesting arrangement, and tape it in place.

Upside-Down Photo
Turn some photos upside down and go through them squinting. Find one that has an area in which values of gray, black and white are all present. Tape it to a board upside down.
