Traditional painting has Chinese roots and comes in two forms. Gonghi is very detailed, with fine brush strokes that follow a prescribed composition. Xieyi uses bolder brush strokes and is more free-form. See traditional Chinese art at the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
Contemporary art became popular during the 1950s as Taiwanese artists focused on abstract and pop art. Many examples of contemporary exist at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei.
Aboriginal art includes woodcarving and basket making. The Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines in Taipei shows a collection of these and other aboriginal art forms.
