1. Have the student locate the faucet to be used for training. Initially this should be performed with the sink in view of the student, but training should evolve to having the student locate the sink even from an out-of-sight position.
2. Guide the student toward the sink and have color-coded labels or stickers to identify the hot and cold sides of the faucet. Physically guide, if necessary, the student toward pointing to the requested side (hot or cold). Reduce prompting to verbal requests only.
3. Have the student identify the hot tap from the cold tap. Color coding may be continued as necessary. Demonstrate turning the faucet on and off.
4. Physically guide the student to turn on the faucet. Preference should be toward the cold side. Temperature regulation is taught in a later program (ADT 64). Reduce physical prompts to the gestural level. Reduce gestural prompts to a verbal request.
5. Reverse the concept of Step 4 to accomplish turning the water off. If reasonable, remove the color-coded stickers.
